Notes from Bob's new family:

....we think Bob is the bee's knees

6 April 2011

The first time we saw Bob, at his foster home with Richard and Christine, my husband said, “Crikey someone call the zoo, a baby hippo has escaped!”. Sure he was chunky and looked like a furry barrel on legs but we still found him adorable. He has the brightest and widest eyes I’ve ever seen on a beagle. You could tell straight away that he was a placid boy which he truly turned out to be.

Well it’s been nearly six months since we got Bob, he has slimmed down considerably and we still adore him to bits. His foster parents warned us that he had a loud bark and boy they certainly weren’t wrong. Bob loves to bark at thunder. We wonder which is loudest Bobs bark or the thunder. Bob believes he is chasing it away and for the most part I guess he does. Luckily for us and our neighbours - apart from the occasional thunder storm or motorbike passing by he is a very quiet boy.

We have two other male beagles and they all seem to be getting on quite well. There were a couple of incidents over food but a little reminder about behaviour during dinner time and they can be fed without any fuss now. Of course they all love their daily walks especially Bob who gets a bit excited and vocal, though he has calmed down a bit now.

Bob also loves to dive under pillows and blankets and be just generally silly. He is also a cuddle monster. If he feels cheated on the cuddle front he’ll let you know. He waits till someone sits down on a recliner and then jumps on the arm rest to receive his cuddle. I have imprints of Bobs bum on my arm rests but I don’t care.

The only naughty thing he has done so far (with the help of my other two) is dig a hole in the backyard. They have dug a hole and now take turns lying in it soaking up the sun’s rays. It’s hard to be angry at a beagle they are just so darned charming and Bob is no exception to that rule.

Thank you for suggesting Bob as an adoption choice. He is a joy.

Just thought you'd like to see a pic of Bob. He is getting along just fine with a constant weight of 17.5ish kilos. I have been feeding him the same food and amount as the other two and he is maintaining his weight quite well. I thought Bob would spice things up a bit but it turns out he is cut from the same cloth as my other two. I now have three lazy slugs that love sleeping on my couch/recliners. Yet I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Wow we cant believe the trial period is up yet. It only feels like Bob has been with us a couple of weeks.

Of course we'd love to keep him but you already knew that. Unfortunately I've only managed to get Bob to the vet once to check his weight. However we are still keeping him on his special diet with lots of walks. I've had to adjust his collar a couple of times as he loses the weight. We will take Bob to the vets in the new year when all the Christmas hoo haa is over and done with and let you know about his progress.

Of our three beagles he is the most vocal one. He gets vocal before walks, dinner and when each of us returns home from work. Not to mention his guard beagle duties!

He has gotten into a couple of scraps with my two boys. I'm glad to say Bob taught them both some much needed manners. They won't try to steal his food anytime soon after that.

Apart from those couple of hiccups they seem to be getting along. Not much play though but I do think I have the laziest four year old beagle on the planet. Toby usually hides when he sees the lead!

Bob often gets silly around bed time. When we are all trying to settle down for the night he gets on his back and squirms and groans till he gets a belly rub. He is definitely a silly and very lovable boy.

We feel very fortunate to have Bob.

Just a quick note on Bob - I thought you might find this amusing. Yesterday during the thunder storms Bob stood on our back verandah and barked at the thunder. I'm happy to announce he managed to chase two storms away yesterday. Below is a pic of him. He likes to sleep on our couch and often under the huge pillow. Hope you all - beagles included have a merry and safe Christmas.

Just a quick note to let you know Bob is settling in well.

We took him for a swim in our pool yesterday. Beagles are definitely not water dogs. I've never seen a dog swim so fast to get out of a pool. At least we know he won't be curious enough to jump in now.

He is getting on well with our boys. After their swim there was even friskiness and the beagles chased each other around the yard for a few minutes.

Bob is getting more and more agile as the days go past. The other day he jumped up onto our outdoor table. Of course then he was too scared to jump back down but he let us know he was in trouble with his loud bark.

In the evenings he likes to sit in our laps when we watch television and get a cuddle. Bob is like an adorable over stuffed Teddy bear. We love him to bits.

Take care

Well on the ride home Bob behaved exceptionally well. He sat next to Shane the entire time and just stared out the front towards the windscreen while accepting a cuddle off Shane.

Arriving home we introduced Bob to our boys one at a time so as not to overwhelm him. Firstly we brought Bailey out to him and walked the two around the block, then introducing Toby and another walk with the three beagles and finally Ratty.

So far all the boys are getting along very well. Bob & Toby even had a quick play wrestle yesterday afternoon. I think there will be more interactions like this as the pack melds.

We brought this lovely new dog bed for Bob but he decided he'd rather sleep on our recliner. We actually don't mind as I've thrown old donnas over our lounge furniture for the boys to snooze up there at their leisure. Embarrassingly enough we both woke up this morning to find Bob between us in bed. Goodness knows how he managed to sneak up onto the bed last night. He looked up at us and presented himself for a belly scratch - typical self indulgent beagle style.

Dinner time the first day was funny. He must have sensed from our beagles that it was nearly meal time because he became very vocal and animated come dinner time. We think he has the loudest bark of any beagle we've ever heard! He is hilarious.

Apart from the occasional hello sniff and tail wags the boys keep pretty much to themselves taking the business of the morning and mid day naps very seriously. Even though it's only been two days I like Bob is already fitting in very well.

I will give him loads of cuddles for you both.

Warm Regards

Shane and I have just been to seen Bob and we both think he is the bee's knees. I feel Bob would fit in with our pack very well. He is a wonderfully placid boy with bright eyes. If Richard and Christine believe we are suitable then we would love to adopt Bob.
